How to Install a Ceiling Fan at Home

So, you’ve just ordered a ceiling fan, or are looking to get one. But what do you do when it shows up?

But, luckily for you if your fan is already on the way or you’re the DIY type, you don’t need to be an expert to install a ceiling fan yourself. In fact, installing a ceiling fan is a great weekend project. It only takes a few hours, and the payoff comes right away! You’ve probably got some questions about where to start, though. Even more luckily for you, we have answers!

Q: What tools will I need?

A: Your instruction manual will specify just what tools you need, but this list will show you where to start.

Crescent Wrench – Use a crescent wrench to tighten a support brace or any bolts in your light fixture.
Cordless Drill with Long Bit – Use a cordless drill to fasten the junction box or utility box to the ceiling joists.
Voltage Tester – Place one of the leads on the ground wire and the other lead on the hot wire to ensure there is no electricity running through these wires during assembly.
Wire Cutters/Strippers – These will allow you to cut and strip the ceiling fan wires during downrod assembly.
Pliers – Use pliers to tighten set screws and lock nuts during assembly.
Screwdrivers – Use a screwdriver to secure the screws on the motor housing and blades to prevent any instability. Some ceiling fans may include a screwdriver in the packaging.
Electrician’s Tape – Electrical tape is pressure-sensitive, flexible, and proves long-lasting insulation. Use it to insulate wire connections.
Ladder – Use a ladder to reach your ceiling fan installation workspace. If your ceiling is 9 feet or higher, a 5-foot stepladder will suffice. If your ceiling is 12 feet or higher, use an 8-foot stepladder. If your ceiling is 15 feet or higher, use an 11-foot stepladder.
Dusk Mask – Protects you against inhaling dust and other debris that may come loose.
Safety Glasses – Shields your eyes from any debris or hazardous materials.

Q: What are some safety tips to keep in mind before installing a ceiling fan?

A: Great question! Use the following as a safety checklist.

First thing’s first: shut off the power at the circuit breaker box.
Then, check that there are no obstructions at the installation site.
Choose a UL-Listed outlet box marked "Acceptable for Fan Support".
Make sure the electrical connections are in compliance with local codes, ordinances, or National Electric Codes.

Q: How do I figure out the wiring needed to install a ceiling fan?

A: Wiring can be intimidating—make sure you check out the YouTube video below before you begin. Also, make extra sure you follow the instruction manual that comes with your fan! Generally, though, here’s what you’ll need to do.

Push the bare metal ends of the wires together (do not twist them against each other). Slide a wire nut over the wires, then twist it on clockwise until it’s secure. Then make sure none of the wires are loose by tugging on the wire nut gently.

Figuring out which color wires need to be connected or separated depends on a couple of factors. First, do you have a single light switch, or dual light switch? Second, did your ceiling fan remote receiver come preinstalled, or do you have to install and wire it?

Once you figure that out, refer to your installation manual for which wires to connect. Again, you can use the YouTube video in addition to the manual. If you are uncomfortable completing any part of the wiring process, please consult a certified electrician.

Q: How do I install a ceiling fan where no light fixture exists currently?

A: In this case, you’ll need to reach out to a certified electrician to install a ceiling fan rated junction box--a container mounted to the ceiling that stores the electrical wire connections. Once the box is in place you can install the fan yourself, if you’re comfortable. Otherwise, just have the electrician go ahead and do that as well.

Q: How do I install a ceiling fan without a light kit?

A: Some ceiling fans can be installed with or without the light kit. If yours can, it will come with a cap to take the place of the light.

After you turn the power off at the circuit breaker and wall light switch, you can remove the light kit pieces. You need to cap off the wires with either wire nuts or a dummy terminal. Tuck the wires back into the switch housing, then put on the cap and reinstall any necessary pull chains.
