Modern Forms Ultra Fan – Hot New Germicidal Ceiling Fan

It’s very rare that we are so taken with the concept, design and quality of a new product that we feel it warrants a thorough review all on its lonesome… but the Modern Forms “Ultra” Fan so wowed us that we had to put pen to paper. Okay, fingers to keyboard, but same difference.

﻿Modern forms started their own line of ceiling fans just a few years ago, but the entire industry was rocked with their advanced features. They included Wi-Fi connectivity built-in, with their own highly functional phone app and integration with Google Home and Alexa. Game changing; and other manufacturers have quickly followed in their footsteps.

Some advanced HVAC systems have UV-C systems built-in (as the effectiveness of this system requires air movement) but Modern Forms has ingeniously created the same effect without the tremendous expense of an HVAC overhaul.

What Modern Forms has done that is so unique here is to integrate a state-of-the-art UV-C germ fighting system INSIDE their air-circulating fans – circulating air and killing germs and viruses at the same time. The advanced UV-C module inside the “Ultra” fan reduces the SARS-CoV-2 virus by as much as 99.99% in breathable air space*.

This is the system I’ve been waiting for – it’ll be an excellent addition to help keep the air near my family as breathable as possible. Not only does this fan help with the quality of the air around you, but they are gorgeous to boot. And talk about features? Okay, let’s talk about features.

DC Fan Motor

First of all, they started with a top-quality DC fan motor (read more about the advantages of DC fans HERE) and created a modern design that is as at home in a modern farmhouse setting as it is in a midtown minimalist apartment. Rated for damp locations, they are just as perfectly suited for a covered porch as they are amid the din of your family room (rated for indoor or outdoor). Finally, they created the fan to be 52” in diameter, the perfect size for most medium and large rooms.

Wi-Fi & Bluetooth Connectivity

Connectivity? Yup, they’ve got you covered with both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity right out of the box. Next, you can pick up their free smartphone app for either Apple or Google phones, which opens a whole range of new features. With the app, in addition to standard fan controls you can create schedules, set sleep timers, invite other users, create groups of fans to control together and use smart features like adaptive learning (an exclusive feature that allows your fan to learn your daily/weekly habits and automatically recommend scheduled activity)… oh, and the fan can be fully integrated with Alexa, Google Assistant, SmartThings, ecobee or Control4 systems for those of use who love to control machines by talking to them. Or yelling at them – we don’t judge.

Lost your phone. AGAIN? No problem – the Ultra fan comes with a wireless Bluetooth remote (with an included wall cradle so at least you’ll always know where it SHOULD be) that boasts six fan speeds and a reverse (for changing your fan to Winter Mode, as explained HERE). One neat feature of the remote is to set your fan on “breeze mode,” where the fan will mimic the natural ebb and flow of the winds in nature by varying the fan speed (works in summer/cooling mode only).

UV-C Light

Finally, let’s talk about that amazing UV-C light. All UV-C systems, by their very nature, are meant to have their modules replaced occasionally (on the Ultra Fan, the UV module has approximately a 6,500-hour lifespan). Luckily, Modern Forms has made this module easy to replace, with just a screwdriver and a few minutes time you’re back in the UV-C business. How do you know when it’s time to replace the module? When it has about 80 hours of life left, the light will begin to blink for a short while, reminding you it’s about time. One last feature on the UV-C light is that you can set the system to automatically turn off the UV light after a period (the default is 45-minutes) so you can start with UV-C protection and drift off to sleep knowing that the system will shut off all by itself.

*Based on tests conducted by an independent CAP and CLIA accredited lab, Innovative Bioanalysis, on the UV-C technology incorporated in the Ultra. The testing conducted on the ULTRA device, with UV-C module enabled and fan operating in the standard forward rotation at the highest speed setting, showed 99.99% (4 log) reduction of active SARS-CoV-2 in the breathable air space after 30 minutes of operation of the system in a closed 8’x8’x10’ room. (Approximately 72° and 48% relative humidity), where the ULTRA was mounted on a 10-inch downrod with a total suspended height of 16 inches from the ceiling.
